Tiffany Greens Golf Course - 4 out of 5 Balls
Updated 05-02-2011
Click the photo to go striaght to the course
Price Reasonable price considering it is a championship course(formally held Senior Tour). Tiffany Greens runs weekly specials to satisfy your golf needs. You may have to shop around and check your local sites or Golfnow.com Either way a great course evenif you have to pay full price.
Course Layout- Are you kidding me #1 the Intimidator. What a challenge to start your round with this monstrous par 5. Scenic course with water in play on many holes. Fairways and greens are always well maintained, with a pretty good pace of play.
Level of Challenge- (Rating 73.5 Slope 133) Several holes provide a choose your own adventure style of golf or per say a good risk/reward course. We will leave it at that the Dirty one usually scores in the upper 90s low 100s.
Golfer Amenities- Alcohol is a plus here with a cooler provided on the cart. Beer prices range depending on the specials so make sure you are looking for specials. There seems to always be a cart girl around when you need one. Bathrooms not your typical Johnny on the sport they have a brick bathroom strategically placed accessing several holes. Carts are loaded here with GPS, Cooler, Club Cleaner and plenty of storage space. Staff is very friendly and they have some of the nicest marshals around(no stuck up snobs on this course).
All around experience- For the money and challenge of course a definite must for value driven golfers who like a good challenge. This course can be a little hard to find if you are not familiar with the area. Only problems we have found so far is that there are a lot of places that you can lose your ball so make sure if you take the Dirty One with you that
Golf Club of Kansas - 4 out of 5 Balls
Click the photo to go straight to the course
Price Very pricy to public should be going private soon. Defiantly make sure you take advantage of a special deal to golf here. Call the Club house to see if there is a special running before you show up, or click the picture and sign up for specials. We played with a kick ass temperature special( pay the price of the temp)
Course Layout- You wont feel like you are in Kansas anymore Dorothy. Like Tiffany another challenging first hole having to carry to make the fairway. There are a lot of holes here that you have to be conservative on to stay in the fairway and in play. This course is designed around an old rock quarry making it most scenic course in the metro area and very challenging. This course will be perfect once completely matured.
Level of Challenge- (Rating 71.7 Slope 137) This course has six sets of tees making it very accessible for any level of golfer to play including the Dirty One. Once again this is risk/reward golf course. The dirty one tried to click his clubs three times and ask for a good score but he shot in the 100s again.
Golfer Amenities- Alcohol is a plus here (a little pricy) with a cooler provided on the cart. Bathroom seemed hard to come by, but there are several scenic spots to shake the 9 Iron out, outdoors old school style. Carts are semi loaded here with Cooler and electric self braking carts with plenty of storage space. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. From the moment we walked in the club house we were greeted by a staff member that was friendly and loaded our carts. This place has a covered driving range, miniature golf course, batting cages, and good food.
All around experience- A course you call your golfing buddies to brag about. The only thing holding this course back in our mind was the price and the fact that it will become private soon. If you are a lottery winner unlike ourselves this would be our number one spot. If I was a golfer looking to join a private club this would defiantly make the top of the list. This course has a strict dress code and is not completely finished making it a little rough riding on the back nine cart path. Cant complain about this place especially when Mullet Mike hit a hole in one on #3 on his first time out.
Painted Hills - 2 Balls
Click the photo to go straight to the course
Price- Not that reasonable when you consider you can play Tiffany Greens on most days for just a little bit more. You can always check out golfnow.com or just call the pro shop the rates are reasonable if you play after 5pm.
Course Layout- If you are up to be really challenged this course does not give you the challenges of say like a Tiffany Greens or Golf Club of Kansas. The holes are located kind of close to each other so if you are a big hitter but sometimes off the mark you might find yourself in another fairway. Might wear a helmet and watch for flying balls.
Level of Challenge- (Rating 67.7 Slope 119) the most challenging thing about the course is keeping the ball in some of the narrow fairways and not on another holes fairway. The course does have a few holes where the golfer is challenged. This is a feel good course if you dont hit many pars on other golf courses you might hit 3 or 4 here. Not calling the golf course easy but some of the holes do lack a good challenge.
Golfer Amenities- Beer prices are a little high around $3.50 per can you will need to rent a cooler in the pro shop and the coolers will hold around 12 beers. The golf carts are gas not electric and there is no bells and whistles on them meaning no GPS, club cleaners etc. Bathrooms are wherever you make them, plenty of trees and private areas to do what needs to be done. I mean pee outside or a Johnny on the spot when its a 100 degrees, come on. The staff here was wonderful a player in our group broke his putter and the pro shop loaned him one without any question genuine friendly people here.
All around experience- If you are in to just going and playing a round of golf and you dont want to spend a lot of money this is the place for you. The scenery is ok but you do have the noise of the street coming into play on several holes. I would recommend coming out here if you get a good special but wouldnt pay the full price.
Shiloh Spings - 2 Balls
Click the photo to go straight to the course
Price Reasonable if you get a special, paying full price makes this place really pricey but if you can get a special its worth it. You can call the club house for specials or sign up for their email club on their website and they will email you specials. This course also available on golfnow.com, but be careful the price on here is sometimes higher than the regular fees.
Course Layout- First hole is a carry hole, not nearly as challenging as the carry at Tiffany Greens or Golf Club of Kansas(if you can drive the ball 50 yards you should be ok). Course features some blind holes, its almost a course you need to play several times to figure out where you are hitting in to. The holes like Painted Hills run close together and you can find yourself hitting into another fairway from time to time. This is another course to bring a helmet.
Level of Challenge- (Rating 71.4 126 Slope) the course similar to Painted Hills in that if you are a bogey or double bogey golfer this course gives you many chances of getting 3 or 4 pars. The challenge here is to stay in the fairway and dont hit yourself into trouble. Interesting course set up with 3 par 5s on the front 9 and only 1 on the back nine. The front nine features two par 3s including back to back on 7 and 8. There are three par 3s on the back nine.
Golfer Amenities- Alcohol is hit or miss on the weekend we played they had beers for 1.50 a piece during the week they can be $3 a beer. No cooler on the cart so you must rent one from the clubhouse. The carts do have GPS which is a plus. The GPS however is only a yardage reader and not the full screen image like Tiffany Greens. They do have a pin placement chart which does come in handy with the GPS. As far as bathrooms, plenty of trees on the course with no houses to hide from. There are some Johnny on the spots.
All around experience- Fun feel good course if you dont mind the drive. If you live in the northland in KC its not to bad just a short drive up I-29 to Platte City, MO. Its a course that is reasonably maintained and very green when we played it. The course offers some challenging holes but the proximity to other fairways can sometimes be a problem. This is a course I would recommend to any golfer that wants to go out and hit some pars or have birdie opportunities that they dont normally get at other courses.
Mozingo Golf Course Maryville, MO - 3.5 Balls
Click the photo to go straight to the course
Price Price is very reasonable considering the quality of course you get to play. It is the best course I have played as far as the cost/quality ratio. Prices are a little higher on the weekends. Getting a seasonal pass is the way to go and will save a lot of money.
Course Layout Mozingo is a par 72 course that offers a challenge for all level of players. It is a very scenic course sculpted around part of Mozingo Lake. The fairways and greens are always in good condition and provide enough undulation to make them a challenge. The rough is usually longer than most courses so it pays to hit fairways and greens.
Level of Challenge There are four sets of tees to chose from depending on your golfing ability. Par and slope ranges from 70.1/123 from the gold tees to 74.8/137 at the black tees. There is enough water to lose a couple balls and enough sand to bring your beach gear. Fairways are decently wide but the rough is long and there are plenty of trees and native grass to avoid. Small amounts of elevation change make club selection a little more difficult.
Golfer Amenities The pro shop is small but has the necessities. The food and beverage selection is typical, no big menus but enough to be able to grab something and go. Bathrooms are nice enough, there is one on hole 5 and one on hole 14. The carts are regular gas ones, no club cleaner or cooler or gps onboard. Staff is very friendly and there are no marshalls out and about. You can be seen from the club house on about half the holes so they will come out to you if you happen to get too drunk to drive the cart properly. There is a driving range and a chipping/putting green available.
All Around Experience Excellent quality course and very reasonable prices. If you're the type of person that likes to make golfing an all day event this may not be the course for you because of the smaller food and beverage selection and limited size of the pro shop. Another down side is the college kids that like to come out and hack up the course and slow the pace of play. Getting on the course early is a plus and the course is beautiful and plenty challenging. I recommend this course to any level of golfers as long as you remember your golf etiquette.
Adams Pointe Golf Club - 3.5 Balls
Click the photo to go straigt to the course
Price A little pricey, but they run weekly specials to satisfy your golf needs. You may have to shop around and check your local sites or Golfnow.comThe course is a lot like Tiffany Greens. Either way a great course evenif you have to pay full price.
Course Layout- Not for sure why but they had us start on number 10 which was a monstrous par 5 that seemed to be all the way up hill. The course is set up to go by the club house after nine holes which can be a bonus at times. I will say number 8 was an interesting par 3. This course has a scenic background and overall I enjoyed the course layout. Oh I almost forgot, there is this little creek that seemed to run through about half the holes and trust me I found it a lot.
Level of Challenge- (Rating 73.8 Slope 131) Just like Tiffany several holes provide a choose your own adventure style of golf or per say a good risk/reward course. This course has four sets of tees to accommodate to about every level of play. The course can seem long at times, but you just need to adjust your play. It is ok to lay up sometimes.
Golfer Amenities- This course had a great chipping area with a large putting green to work out all the problems before the round. Drinks seemed a little pricy but they had a wide variety of drinks and snacks. Bathrooms? Well I must have missed them if they are out there, sorry guys I cant remember on this one. Good news is there are a lot of wooded areas to drain the 9 iron and look for lost balls at the same time. Carts seemed to be extra large here which is a plus if your golfing with Paydirt or Tanaka. Staff is very friendly and they have a decent size pro shop and dining area.
All around experience- Due to the price and distance for me this is a onetime golf course. I found it very challenging and very similar to Tiffany Springs Golf Course. This course can be a little hard to find if you are not familiar with the area, as this course sets back off the road, and they are doing construction in the area. Pack some extra balls cause as this course is set up your going to need them.
Dubs Dread - 3.75 BALL RATING
Updated 05-18-2011
Click the photo to go straight to the course
Price- Extremely reasonable for the quality of course. Dubs Dread offers specials such as Tuesday special 20 dollars after 3 pm with cart and 2 dollar beer all day. All these prices come with cart.
Course Layout- Bring your driver on this course. Dubs Dread used to be the longest golf course in the world. Yardage ranges from 5400 yards to 7100 depending on the tee boxes. Back nine brings water into play on several holes. Whats nice is after you finished a hole the next tee box was sometimes literally just steps away. The fairways run close together in some spots but you never have that feeling like your hitting on to someone elses hole. With the spacious fairways that are lined with trees you still felt the privacy of some more spread out golf courses. Felt that the back 9 was more scenic than the front nine. So if you come out for just 9 keep that in mind.
Level of Challenge- (Rating 73.8 Slope 133) This course has many holes that golf course management comes into play. There are some holes that if you are a big hitter you can be rewarded but with the reward comes risk. I feel that if you have played the course several times you would have a huge advantage of knowing where the good layup spots are. If you like to pull out the driver you can have a lot of fun on this course. However if you are a slicer you are going to have a long day. Several of the dog legs presented a challenge if you werent careful off the tee box.
Golfer Amenities- Beer prices might be some of the best in the city, Monday and Tuesday beers are only $2. When you buy beer from the bar to take on the course they put the brew in a real cooler that fits right onto the golf cart and not one of those bags that you really have to dig around in to grab a cold one. The golf carts dont really have all the bells and whistles as some courses but at least they were electric carts. GPS is not equipped on the golf carts but this is a course that if you have a hand held GPS device it would come in very handy. They also give a book with hole descriptions which is nice to have. The bathrooms in the clubhouse were nice and very clean. On the course the bathrooms were a little hard to find but did manage to spot a Johnny on the spot. Of course you can always go behind one of the many trees when needed.
All around experience- Legendary golfers like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead and Jug McSpaden (which also was the course architect) have all played this course. From the minute I walked in I noticed a high level of customer service. Director of golf James Angelotti was very accommodating. The pro shop is up to date and has everything you would need. The bar and grill seemed like a really nice area to sit and have dinner and a drink after a round of golf. There was also a nice patio outside the bar to sit and throw down some beers with your fellow golfers. The course was very green but had some rough patches here and there. The greens were fast and a bit worn. I strongly recommend this course if you want to save some money, be challenged and enjoy a nice scenic golf course. The place is clean and the service was something that was a pleasant surprise. The golf course isnt the easiest to find if you arent from around the area but I think when you get out there you will think its worth it.
PARADISE POINT GOLF COMPLEX (SMITHVILLE, MISSOURI) THE POSSE - 4.00 BALL RATING
Click the photo to go straight to the course
Price- Another course with a great price if you are looking to play at a really nice, scenic golf course and not pay a ton. Paradise Point boasts 2 golf courses at their complex: the Outlaw and the Posse and the prices are as follows for the Outlaw it is $28.50 before 3pm and $18.50 after 3pm on weekdays (add $16 for cart and$4 for pull cart rental). On the weekend the Outlaw is $31 dollars before 3pm and $18.50 after. The Posse is $26.50 before 3pm weekdays and $18.50 after. On the weekends the Posse goes for $28.50 before 3pm and $18.50 after 3 Oclock. (Add $16 for cart rental, $4 for pull cart rental)
Course Layout- We played the Posse course and the first several holes were right alongside Smithville Lake. Two of the holes on the front nine back up right on the lake making the lake and boats an outstanding backdrop for what really is a very scenic course. Fairways and greens were well maintained and extremely green. If you enjoy playing golf as an escape this is the place to go as you feel so far away but really not as Smithville is a hop, skip and a jump from the Northland and an easy drive from downtown.
Level of Challenge- (Blue tee box Rating 71.7 Slope 132 /White tee box Rating 69.9 Slope 124) The Posse is a course that if you love to use the driver you can us it on almost all of the par 4s and 5s. There was really only one hole were most of the group kept the drivers in the bag. If you can launch the ball there are at least 2 par 4s you might be able to reach. The fairways were wide in most spots but there are a few holes you could easily find yourself into another fairway if your not careful. Sand bunkers were throughout the course including several challenging tall grass bunkers. Two holes on the front nine you had to really be careful on approach shots or you would end up in Smithville lake but those that like a good challenge these holes are fun. Some trees come into play and sometimes make your second shot difficult so you need to be concerned about shot placement off the tee.
Golfer Amenities- Beer prices are just about as good as anywhere. You can get a 6 pack for the cart for only $14. The pro shop is stocked full of equipment and golf apparel, I would put this pro shop as one of the better ones that we have scene. The clubhouse had a snack bar had everything you would need for a pre-round, post-round or mid-round snack or meal. Whats nice is the 9th hole goes right in front of the clubhouse making it easy and convenient to grab a drink or some food. The course does not have electric carts and uses the gas powered ones. There is no GPS on these carts. As far as the bathrooms they strategically placed a very nice bathroom that is accessible from three different holes on the golf course and of course you can always use the clubhouse restrooms at the turn. This complex also offers lessons and has a four hole training facility which makes this a great place to get lessons. Paradise Point also has practice greens and a driving range.
All around experience- One of the things I notice is how golfers are treated by the staff and I found the staff and in particular John Marquardt to be very accommodating for our golf experience. The pace of play was decent considering how busy it was when we went to play. One of the big reasons this course gets the 4 ball rating is for various reasons but two huge components of this complex is having two golf courses to choose from and a training facility with 4 practice holes. We hope to go play the other course at Paradise Point the Outlaw in the near future. Having the lake as a backdrop is huge for this course and makes it one of the more scenic places we have played.
PLATTSBURG COUNTRY CLUBPLATTSBURGMO 816-539-3328
3.5 BALL RATING
Click the photo to go straight to the course
Price- Let me put it this way its a terrific deal to play golf at Plattsburg CC M-F 18 holes $22, 9 holes $13.50, senior $20. There is a cart rental fee (and you will need a cart unless you are in big time shape) $13 for 18 and $15 for 9 holes. Dont get me wrong you could walk this course but I would strongly recommend using a push cart! Whats really good at Plattsburg CC is the memberships it would be hard pressed to find a better deal than this anywhere you look. Family membership with unlimited golf $750 and use of the pool and clubhouse. If you are hosting a party etc, you can use the clubhouse to host your event. An individual membership is $585 for a year that is $48.75 per month! With that deal you still will have to pay for a cart which would be $10 per 18. Many members on this golf course have their own golf carts and they can be stored for $150 per year and then another $150 per year cart path fee. A lifetime membership would be $6,500.
Course Layout- Scenic terrain is the first thing that comes to mind like youre playing in the country, many of the trees are over 100 years old. Rolling hills ,trees and mini lakes. The greens were in great shape with some of the nicest greens we have seen. The members take great care of repairing their divots. There are a few holes that if you arent careful you could hit into another fairway but its not very noticeable. The 15th and 18th holes are very good looking holes. The 15th is a par 3 with water in play but you shoot down off a cliff as your approach, which these are always fun. (this is the signature hole on the course). The 18th is scenic par 4 with a pond with a water fountain which provides you with a lasting impression.
Level of Challenge- (Blue tee box Rating 69.8 Slope 121 /White tee box Rating 68.1 Slope 117). We played with Gary Ellington which is a member of the course and also the treasurer for Plattsburg CC and he showed us the way. This course is definitely one that can be unpredictable if you are not playing with someone that knows the layout. There are several holes were you cant really see where your shooting unless youve played before and know the ins and outs of the course. What is neat is that several holes you had to make a choice to either try to bomb your drive and clear the danger or take the safe route and layup. For big hitters several of the Par 4s can be reached with a solid drive.
Golfer Amenities- Beer prices were very, very good. Not to mention the specials they have on beer including Tuesdays you can get dollar beers and dollar tacos after 5. There are no built in coolers on the cart but the pro shop has plenty that they let you borrow. The carts are gas and are not equipped with GPS (without a guide we would have really needed one). There was a bathroom facility on the course that could be accessed from several of the holes and of course you can always go back in the pro shop at the turn as the 10th is right outside the clubhouse. The menu in the pro shop was better than average with plenty of selections and they even had a BBQ smoker outside that they fire up for the golfers. Plattsburg CC had a very nice Olympic sized swimming pool that had a zero entry walk in that is great if you have small children. A drawback is no driving range available at this course. And of course with the distance you might be driving for awhile to get to the course.
All around experience- Going to be quite honest with you when we do the reviews what is really noticeable is how we were treated when we show up to a golf course. When we arrived we were we were greeted by Stephanie who is the club house manager who then introduced to Gary Ellington who is a member and treasurer of the course and he fulfills many duties at the golf course. Gary took the time to get us started and was a guide for us on the course. He let us have the all around experience talking about the history of the course and gave great golf course management tips while playing. Customer service in this day and age can be hard to come by but not at Plattsburg CC. Everybody that we met that worked at the course was really friendly. If you live in the KC metro its going to take you awhile to get there but once you take the time for a nice drive in the country you will be rewarded with a very nice and friendly place to play golf!
STONE CANYON GOLF CLUB - 4.25 BALL RATING
Click the photo to go straight to the course
Price- Before you freak out this course is a must for anyone who loves and enjoys the true sport of golf with that said it is anywhere between $35 and $85. Not for sure about you but for us this course is not awalking course.Click the photo and check out the membership fees. This course is still new and in the building process this may be the time to join. Take advantage of the opportunity while you can.
Course Layout- This course is a little different than the traditional course sporting 5 Par 5s and 5 Par 3s and you guessed it 8 Par 4s(Paydirt is still doing the math). By far this course had the best fairways we have seen this year. This course is well maintained and was in perfect shape. You want to talk scenic terrain this course has several holes that make you feel like you are in the country looking in on the city with beautiful skyline views of KC. The greens were in great shape with some of the best maintained greens we have seen.People hear obviously know the right way to fix a divot on the green. The holes are well spread out here making it feel like you are just golfing with your group and not 15 other people hitting into you or teeing off while you are putting just feet away.
Level of Challenge-(Shark 75.2/144 - Black 73.2/141 - Member70.5/135 - White 68.5/129 - Red 64.7/112)Make sure you pick the right tee box that fits your game because this course can be extremely long if you pick the wrong box. We chose to play the Member Tees and this seemed to be the perfect choice for our game. This course had some of the most unusual sand bunkers I have seen and they can come into play on a lot of holes if you are not careful. If you like to bump
and run this course is a must having a links style to it.
Golfer Amenities- Beer prices were normal nothing to go crazy about but that is why there course is probably well maintained because you dont have the guys in the garage tanking beers and ripping up the fairways. When they drove our cart up to us we noticed they had tees and wet and dry towels available with the cart(thats a first). There are no built in coolers on the cart but they have club and ball cleaners on the cart which is becoming a must. The carts are gas and are not equipped with GPS but the course was logged into the Garmin system we were carrying. There was a nice indoor bathroom right outside of hole 1 and can be accessed at the turn as well. Like I said before this course is still in the building stage so the temporary club house is small but they do have a driving range and putting green.
All around experience- Like we have said several times when we do the reviews what is really noticeable is how we were treated when we show up to a golf course. From the minute we arrived we felt like we were in first class. A gentleman met us in the parking lot and carted are bags and was very professional. They seem to pride them self on customer service and it was well
shown. This course is not that far from KC but make sure you call ahead and get good directions. The area is expanding and can be a little difficult to find. This course gets the rating it gets mainly because of customer service and this course was the closest thing to feeling like you are a PGA Pro out on tour. The course is in magnificent shape and we feel it will only get better in the next year or two when completely finished. This course is a must at least one time.
Sycamore Ridge Golf Course - 4.0 Balls
Click the photo to go straight to the course
Price This course is not that pricey but if you have time it is best to play 36 here to get the best bang for your buck(they have a pretty good repeat price). Always try to get a special, but paying full price is worth it here. You can call the club house for specials or sign up for their email club on their website and they will email you specials. No matter what the price this is a must to play at least once.
Course Layout- Front 9 Links and Back 9 Traditional, doesnt get any better than that, two courses in one. This course has some of the best bent grass fairways we have seen, especially with the heat this year. First few holes here are setup to score. The front 9 has 3 par 5s and 3 par 3s. The Back 9 is heavily wooded with several elevation changes which make the layout a little tough and challenging at times. This course is well spread out and designed to keep the pace of play moving. A lot of time must be spent to keep up with the greens and fairways here as they were in great shape.
Level of Challenge- (Black 76.2/150 Blue 72.7/142 White 70/135 Yellow 65.4/118) the front nine on this course is similar to Stone Canyon with an awesome links style setup. The back 9 is your more traditional style course, but dont think it is easy as the back 9 has some very challenging holes. The challenge here is club selection on the tee box. A lot of holes are set up to make you second guess. There are plenty of sand traps so best bet is to grip it, rip it, and hope you hit it straight.
Golfer Amenities- Alcohol is a must here with prices about the best we have seen. This golf cart has a sweet removable cooler on the cart and a club/ball cleaner. The carts do not have GPS but they do have a picture book built into the cart with color hole by hole descriptions which is a plus. They do have a pin placement chart which does come in handy with the book. As far as bathrooms, well I do not remember seeing any (probably the cheap beer prices had something to do with it) but again plenty of trees on the course with no houses to hide from. This course also had a driving range, chipping area, putting green, and a teaching academy.
All around experience-A little bit of a drive from the Northland, but well worth it. This course has a feel for everyone. This course has combined the city, the country, the lake, and the woods, creating two beautiful courses in one, links and traditional style golf. This course has a friendly staff willing to teach the game to anyone of any level. Most important is that this course is fun. The only problem I see for this course is that it is high maintenance. If they do not stay on top of the fairways and greens this course could have some major problems.
